We have spent a year converting our programming into movie making and have had a ton of fun doing so.
We are still offering the craft we love: acting, singing and dancing. Movies have been produced then sent to the editing suites. The final product was streamed to our families, friends and supporters.
We have discovered camera tricks to make the actors appear closer than they are (sometimes they aren’t even recorded on the same day!) and added special effects to enhance our exciting new way of presenting art like fire, snow, magic strikes and even flying.
KUDOS has made the decision to continue to offer only movie making projects until more restrictions can be lifted. Here are a few reasons why:
· We work with kids. And kids aren’t being vaccinated. And even though the State of California has said performers can work without masks, they also say that performers would have to be tested twice a week. We don’t want to add this stress to our kids.
· We love our small theatre and so do our families. It is the perfect size for what we do. But in today’s world, our size is working against us. We can’t get a viable sized audience into our theatre to make all the effort of putting on a play financially prudent.
· We are also opposed to segregating our audience into Vaccinated and Non-Vaccinated sections. This is something that would allow us to gain more audience members according to the State. But honestly, it really isn’t enough to make a huge difference.
We will return to live plays. We just don’t know when. We can guess it may be sometime mid-2022. Probably when all of the kids have been vaccinated.
So here is the short list of what has changed. We do have a more comprehensive line-by-line business operations that we give to our registered families at time of registration, but here it is in a nutshell.
Cast size is limited to 22-24 actors and a movie crew of 2-4 people. We did this before COVID so this hasn’t changed. But each person will now have their own chair and work surface in the house spaced 3’-6’ apart.
You’ve got to be healthy to participate. Temperature checks are taken before entering. Only registered participants are allowed in the building. Parents are not allowed inside.
Lots of hand washing is done. Kids bring a personal hand sanitizer bottle with them and keep it out on their table. And lots and lots of cleaning.
If anyone is moving around the building, they have to wear a mask. If anyone is sitting in their designated seating area or are spaced 6’ away from each other, they can take off their mask.
Group singing is done with masks on. For musicals, we record the actors in vocal sessions and they lip sync to their own voices for the movie.
Masks are worn except when filming the final product. Unmasked actors are able to stay unmasked for 15 minutes. At that point, they are excused to take a break, mask up and sanitize.
We don’t share personal items.
Since the State and Local guidelines change, so will our business operations. But the above list has basically stayed the same and so these are the new rules.
In the year we have produced movies, KUDOS remained COVID free. Rob, Ria and Sarah are also fully vaccinated.
