KUDOS Children’s Theatre Company was co-founded in 2003 by Sarah Rushton and served the San Joaquin County community for 21 years through youth theatre education, productions, and creative programming.
As Co-Founder & Artistic Director, Sarah guided the organization’s artistic vision, educational philosophy, and long-term program development while collaborating with teaching artists, staff, families, volunteers, and community members throughout KUDOS’ history.
KUDOS was built on the belief that theatre education should support both artistic growth and personal development. Through ensemble-based creative experiences, students were encouraged to build confidence, communication skills, responsibility, and creative independence within a supportive learning environment.

The educational philosophy of KUDOS Children’s Theatre Company emphasized process-based learning, where creativity, exploration, and participation were considered as important as performance outcomes.
Theatre was approached as a space for discovery and personal growth. Students were encouraged to take creative risks, strengthen communication skills, and develop confidence through collaborative artistic experiences.
Learning environments were designed to support curiosity, imagination, and respect for others while allowing students to develop their individual voices within an ensemble setting.
At its core, KUDOS viewed theatre as a meaningful way for young people to connect, express themselves, and grow through the arts.
KUDOS programming was designed as a progressive learning model that introduced students to theatre through structured creative exploration and hands-on participation.
Early training focused on theatre games, ensemble exercises, movement, voice, and improvisation to help students develop foundational performance and communication skills.
As students gained experience, programming expanded into storytelling, character development, rehearsal process, and production work inspired by folktales, literature, music, movement, and collaborative staging techniques.
Students were encouraged to engage with theatre as a multi-disciplinary art form while developing problem-solving skills, creative awareness, and ensemble responsibility through active participation.

At the heart of KUDOS Children’s Theatre Company was a strong sense of community built through shared creative experience. Students, teaching artists, and families participated in a collaborative environment where theatre became both an artistic practice and a space for connection and belonging.
Beyond rehearsals and performances, the organization encouraged a culture of encouragement, responsibility, and mutual support. Students were given opportunities to contribute both onstage and behind the scenes while developing friendships and a sense of belonging through participation in the arts.
Rehearsal spaces, productions, technical theatre opportunities, and community traditions helped create an environment where creativity and teamwork were valued equally.
This sense of connection became an important part of the KUDOS experience and shaped the organization’s culture throughout its 21-year history.
As Co-Founder & Artistic Director, Sarah guided the artistic development and production leadership of KUDOS Children’s Theatre Company for over two decades.
Productions were developed within an educational framework that balanced artistic goals with meaningful student participation and ensemble-centered productions.
KUDOS productions integrated music, movement, visual storytelling, puppetry, and collaborative staging techniques while providing students with opportunities to participate in full-scale theatrical experiences.
Each production was approached as both a creative work and a learning environment, encouraging students to develop artistic skills, responsibility, and confidence through the rehearsal and performance process.
